Administrative Rule 4010-01 (Part B)
Guidelines for the Approval of Faculty
Purpose
Provides guidelines for the faculty approval process.
Statement
- If a dean or designee decides that an applicant should be considered for employment
as a faculty member, they submit an approval request. The following information is
required to be on file in order to approve a faculty member to teach credit classes:
- application for employment,
- transcripts and/or certification of all academic and education work,
- work experience records and other documentation, as needed, and,
- completed Faculty Approval Form, authorized by the dean or designee indicating recommendation
to approve.
- For faculty teaching credit classes, the Dean of Instruction will review the applicant's file to determine if minimum standards have been met and notify the appropriate dean or designee of action taken. Commitment on hiring faculty who teach credit courses shall not be made until after an instructor approval has been acted upon favorably by the Academic Affairs office.
- The Academic Affairs office will maintain a master list of approved faculty for credit courses.
- Faculty may be approved to teach non-credit courses by the relevant supervisor, applying the minimum standards listed below. Non-credit faculty may, when appropriate, be hired without a transcript.
- The following are current minimum approval standards for full and part-time faculty of:
Transfer
The general minimum qualification for transfer courses is:
- Master's degree in the teaching field from a regionally accredited institution, or
- Master's degree in a related field plus a minimum of 27 graduate quarter hours (18 semester hours) in the teaching field from a regionally accredited institution, or
- Discipline-specific equivalent. The Dean of Instruction will maintain a document detailing all discipline-specific equivalent qualifications as well as definitions of fields that are considered related.
If an applicant has not yet completed the above requirements for lower-division transfer courses, the dean or designee may request provisional approval using the Faculty Approval Form and following the Provisional Approval Process maintained by the Dean of Instruction.
Career and Technical, Occupational Supplementary Complementary General Education
The general standard for qualification to teach in a CTE program is:
- Four calendar years of non-teaching work experience in an occupational area directly related to the instructional program; or
- Two calendar years of non-teaching work experience in combination with industry-specific specialized training.
- The Dean of Instruction can authorize the appointment of faculty who do not yet meet these requirements but do have training and experience. This should be done only in cases of emergency and cannot last more than one term unless the faculty member achieves the minimum qualifications over the course of the term. A written description of how the faculty will be supported by the department will be provided.
Work experience, specialized training, and other general definitions are maintained by the Dean of Instruction, as well as credentials that are specific to particular teaching fields. External discipline-specific accreditation requirements in some fields may exceed these general minimum qualifications.
Postsecondary Remedial and Adult Basic Skills
Subject matter competence may be used as a standard for approval as documented by:
- Certification
- Degree
- Experience
Non-Credit
Demonstrated knowledge of subject matter, which may be documented through related work experience and/or course work.
